Domestic Water Buffalo

(Bubalus bubalus)

Water Buffalo have been domesticated for about 5,000 years. There are two types: River Buffalo and Swamp Buffalo. Swamp Buffalo are found in SE Asia. They are primarily used as draft animals, for meat, and for manure. They are gentle, slow-moving, and hardy. Their preferred habitats are wetlands and rice fields, they are well adapted to muddy terrain. Their population has declined due to mechanization and urbanization.
