Greater Roadrunner

These photos were taken in southern Arizona by Jan Fletcher, an artist and photographer.

The Greater Roadrunner is found in the southwestern United States, Mexico, and parts of Central America. It is the state bird of New Mexico. It occurs in desert and scrubland habitats, often in arid areas with cacti, shrubs, and rocky terrain. They are omnivorous and opportunistic feeders, and eat a variety of foods, including insects, lizards, small mammals, snakes, and even fruits and seeds. They are known for their ability to hunt and kill prey larger than themselves, including rattlesnakes. They build their nests in shrubs or low trees.
