California Condor

These photos were taken on the south rim of the Grand Canyon, Arizona.

Extinct in the wild in 1987, California Condors have been bred in captivity and reintroduced into the wild. There are now about 116 California Condors in the Arizona/Utah flock. There are only about 347 in the wild, and a total of 561 in existence (as of 2022). Listed as critically endangered, they are scavengers on carrion. The largest North American bird, they can have a wingspan of three meters, and can live to 60 years of age.
